workers. Increasingly called "precarity", the term has only recently been invented, and has quickly become a major concern among not only scholars studying the transformation of employment, but also policy makers, union leaders, feminists, immigrants, and social activists generally. Maar 40,7 procent van die doelgroep kan betaalde arbeid vinden. Europees koploper is Zwitserland met 69 procent. Het Europees gemiddelde is 47,3 procent.</p><p>Nochtans heeft de overheid al jaren streefcijfers voor de aanwerving van gehandicapten. Die zijn er zowel federaal als bij de deelstaten en lokale besturen. Voor de Vlaamse administratie gaat het om 3 procent. Dat streefcijfer wordt structureel niet gehaald, ook niet door de andere overheden. Alleen de Waalse provincies en gemeenten slagen erin.</p><p>De CD&V-senatoren Sabine de Bethune en Brigitte Grouwels willen dan ook een ambitieuzere aanpak. 'Bijna vijf jaar na de goedkeuring van het VN-verdrag voor de rechten van personen met een handicap staan we eigenlijk niet ver genoeg.</p><p>De Bethune legt daarom een pakket van maatregelen neer bij verschillende beleidsniveaus. Het opvallendste is om de streefcijfers voor aanwerving in de publieke sector te vervangen door dwingende quota. En net als in Duitsland zouden er effectief boetes betaald moeten worden als die quota niet gehaald worden. Die boetes vloeien dan naar een fonds om mensen met een beperking aan werk te helpen. </p><p>Het plan richt zich in de eerste plaats op de publieke sector, voor private werkgevers wordt naar de sociale partners gekeken. De Stichting hecht veel belang aan de valorisatie van haar onderzoek. Een gunstig ondernemingsklimaat is belangrijk om ondernemerschap en ondernemingszin te bevorderen. It is conceptualized in different ways as, for example, a</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">geographical process; a form of governmentality; the restoration of elite</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">class power; a political project of institutional change; a set of</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">transformative ideas; a development policy paradigm; an epistemic community</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">or thought collective; and an economic ideology or doctrine (Springer,</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">2010, 2016a; Flew, 2014; Birch, 2015a). In relation to organization</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">studies, and this journal especially, neoliberalism has been strongly</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">associated with the restructuring of economics as a tool of governance</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">(e.g. Davies and Dunne, 2016), the transformation of universities and</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">academia as sites of knowledge pro-sumption and immaterial labour (e.g.</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">Rai, 2013), the rise of business schools as centres of social and political</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">reproduction (e.g. Harney, 2009), and the extension of particular forms of</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">corporate governance dominated by shareholder interests (Birch, 2016).</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">Neoliberalism has been used to analyse a diverse range of social,</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">political, economic, and ecological changes, processes, practices,</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">subjectivities, and much else besides. In one article, for example,</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">Venugopal (2015) argues that it has been used to analyse almost everything,</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">from the development of ecosystem services through urban regeneration to</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">financialization. Others argue that neoliberalism, as currently understood</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">and theorized, is over-stated as a way to understand recent and ongoing</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">social changes (Barnett, 2005; O'Neill and Weller, 2014; Birch, 2015b;</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">Storper, 2016). Such debate raises the question of whether we have hit peak</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">neoliberalism in terms of the usefulness of the concept to our analysis of</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">and political engagement with the social world (Springer, 2016b).</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">Neoliberalism's increasing ubiquity has come at a significant price. Such</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">variety and diversity in intellectual analysis (i.e. explanatory framework)</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">and substantive topic (i.e. thing to explain) have produced a glut of</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">concepts, theories, analyses and so; while this medley can be seen as a</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">necessary – and fruitful – outcome of such a hybrid and heterogeneous</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">process, it also has the potential side-effect of leaving us more confused</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">than enlightened. According to some scholars (e.g. Boas and Gans-Morse,</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">2009; Birch, 2015b; Venugopal, 2015), neoliberalism is at risk of becoming</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">almost useless as a result of its indiscriminate use, especially as it is</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">increasingly taken up in popular debate and discourse. Not all agree with</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">this assessment, obviously. A number of scholars stress the need to</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">theorize neoliberalism carefully and precisely in order to ensure its</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">continuing relevance as a useful concept for understanding the world (e.g.</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">Peck, 2013; Springer, 2014; also Birch, 2016).</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">It is increasingly difficult, on the one hand, to parse or synthesize this</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">intellectual (yet often contradictory) abundance and, on the other hand, to</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">apply it to policy or practical issues facing diverse communities,</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">societies, organizations and individuals around the world. A body of</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">literature is emerging that is critical of current conceptions and</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">understandings of neoliberalism, highlighting these issues. Another body of</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">work is emerging that tries to rehabilitate neoliberalism as a concept and</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">a useful way to analyse the damage that contemporary political economy is</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">doing to so many people.</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">The aim of this special issue, therefore, is to revisit and rethink</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">neoliberalism as an abstract concept and as an empirical object. Specifically, this 'crisis' will be examined in the context of a broader global and historical power dynamics, which condition unauthorised migrations and which are integral in understanding the way in which the 'crisis' has both emerged and been addressed. The talk will give an overview of the 'crisis' in its longer duration, as well as emphasising the diversity of recent migratory journeys and experiences. Drawing on the findings of a new research project that is based on in-depth qualitative interviews with new arrivals in Kos (Greece), Sicily (Italy) and Malta, the project will shed light on and question a range of assumptions about unauthorised migration. Critical engagements have grown (also in the West) becoming more </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">urgent and widespread in the media and the broader cultural and political domains reaching </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">and involving millions. </span></p><p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">In political studies and heterodox economics, many diverse theorists are elaborating,</font></p><p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">and calling for, the actualization of radical democratic alternatives that practice a generative, </font><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">ethical, post-capitalocentric economy (e.g. Castoriadis, 2010; Gibson-Graham, </span><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">1996b, 2003, 2006; Kelly, 2012; Latouche, 2009; Wolff, 2012).</font></p><p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">Diverse economies are not only possible but also richly present and growing </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">in significance globally. Diverse economies exhibit values, mode of exchanges, work, </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">ownerships, and practices that do not follow the logic of capitalist accumulation and profit </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">maximization concentrated in private ends solely for private purposes. Studying, proposing, </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">and theorizing such alternatives are not an easy feat, particularly if one is to avoid </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">romanticization and stereotyping and aims to maintain a vigilant eye by ascertaining in </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">what ways post-capitalist alternatives do increase liberty, equality, and individual and collective </span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium">welfare.</span><br></p><p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:medium"><br></span></p><p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">We call on theorists and researchers to join this urgent conversation on the disharmony,</font></p><p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">incoherence, and contradictions of capitalism. De masteropleiding is vorig academiejaar pas begonnen, maar slaat duidelijk aan. Vorig jaar was het volgens de docenten al een groot succes. Sommige afgestudeerde studenten kregen al meteen een job via hun stageplaats en twee studenten kregen direct na hun master een onderzoeksbeurs. Ze worden opgeleid om op een wetenschappelijk onderbouwde, geëngageerde en verantwoordelijke wijze te kunnen omgaan met complexe problemen van sociale ongelijkheid en discriminatie. De masteropleiding benadrukt theorievorming en onderzoek maar legt ook de link met de praktijk en het werkveld. Het programma bestaat uit verplichte vakken die op een dag gedurende het eerste semester in een centrale locatie in Brussel worden georganiseerd. De verdiepingsvakken worden aan de verschillende universiteiten aangeboden, maar kunnen op afstand via <i>teleclassing</i> aan de eigen instelling worden gevolgd.
