BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The PhD is funded through a joint chair “Diversity Management and Performance” at EGiD – HEC University of Liège, headed by Prof. dr. Annie Cornet (the co-ordinating partner), and SEIN – Identity, Diversity & Inequality Research of Hasselt University, headed by Prof. dr. Patrizia Zanoni.

The joint chair aims at funding research on diversity management practices suitable to companies operating in the Belgian context. It covers one joint PhD research project over a period of four years.

The joint chair is sponsored by three companies: SNCB/NMBS, Mobistar and GDF-Suez. All three companies will be involved in the research and all other activities around the chair.

ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will obtain a PhD in Business Economics from the University of Liège and Hasselt University. Combining existing social psychological and organizational theories of diversity, the research shall deal with 1) the role of ethnicity in recruitment and selection procedures, 2) the position and the experiences of ethnic minority candidates in ethnically mixed teams, and 3) the functioning of ethnically mixed teams. Where relevant, an intersectional approach including age and gender will be adopted.

The project will contribute empirically and theoretically to the organizational literature on diversity and inclusion in organizations, with a specific focus on ethnicity. It will also provide input to the involved companies to design and implement diversity and inclusion policies and practices aimed at improving the recruitment of ethnic minority candidates, their work experiences and career outcomes, and the functioning of ethnically mixed teams.

The research will be conducted through a mixed quantitative-qualitative method. Quantitative information will be collected through internal documents and databanks of the organizations and a survey. Qualitative information will be collected through internal documents, semi-structured interviews and participant observation of selection and recruitment processes and teams.

The doctoral candidate will disseminate his or her scientific work through presentations and publications for academic and practitioners’ audiences and contribute to the all the activities related to the chair. He or she will be asked to support educational activities for a maximum of 10% of his or her time.

He or she will complete the program of the Doctoral School in Management Sciences at the HEC Management School of the University of Liège providing high quality graduate education on methodological and business topics.

The PhD will be a member of EGiD – HEC University of Liège and SEIN – Identity, Diversity & Inequality Research of Hasselt University. Prof. Dr. Annie Cornet and Prof. Dr. Patrizia Zanoni will be the promoters.

PRE-QUALIFICATIONs
Candidates for this position should be in possession of a ‘Licence’ or Master’s degree in Business, organization studies or the social sciences.

They should have an excellent knowledge of English and of French or Dutch as well as a working knowledge of the other main language in Belgium.

Interest in the topic. Previous experience in research is not required but an asset.

Sense of initiative, good organizational and communication skills and ability to work in a team.
