Relocating Subalternity conference

Relocating Subalternity

The symposium Relocating Subalternity aims to explore both limits and potentialities of the notion of (gendered) subalternity. How does subalternity relate to agency and subjectivity? What are the possible intersections between subalternity and other forms and experiences of subjectivation? Can the subaltern become an agent of struggles? What are the political implications of the increasing interest on marginality and subalternity in academia and art?

The conference will be a space for political and theoretical confrontation among different conceptual and normative positions that emerged in feminist, postcolonial and queer theory. Speakers will be Nikita Dhawan (Goethe-University Frankfurt), Elsa Dorlin (Panthéon-Sorbonne University), Dhruv Jain (Jan van Eyck Academie), Jasbir Puar (Rutgers University), Srila Roy (University of Nottingham), Asha Varadharajan (Queen's University), Jamila Mascat and Sara de Jong (both JvE Academie). The conference is organised by the Jan van Eyck Academie.

Understanding the Persistence of Inequality in Higher Education: Evidence from Australia

Understanding the Persistence of Inequality in Higher Education: Evidence from Australia
3 April 2012

Trends in Wealth Inequality in Australia from the Neoliberal Reforms to the Global Financial Crisis During the 1980s and 1990s, Australian governments embraced neoliberalism and in the long boom that followed, total household wealth increased dramatically. Examination of the distribution of this increasing wealth has been constrained by a lack of data on the individual wealth holdings of Australians. Using data from the National Accounts published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Business Review Weekly Rich Lists, this paper examines the relationship between total household wealth, wealth per capita and the wealth of the wealthiest Australians. The results presented here show that during the past two decades, the wealth holdings of the wealthiest 20 Australians exceeded the wealth holdings of the three million people residing in the poorest 20 per cent of Australian households.

Understanding the Persistence of Inequality in Higher Education: Evidence from Australia During the latter half of the twentieth century, Australia, like many OECD countries, experienced rapid expansion in participation in higher education which was supported by government through increases in the number of publicly funded university places. However in spite of this expansion, a disproportionately large share of the undergraduate student population is still drawn from higher socio-economic backgrounds. This paper seeks to understand the persistence of inequality in higher education by examining changes in patterns of participation in Australian universities since the 1970s. Using logistic regressions to analyse data collected by three Australian surveys conducted between 1987 and 2005, the authors examine the influence of having a university-educated parent on an individual’s chances of obtaining a higher education degree. They find that although the expansion of higher education has had some impact in terms of reducing inequality, having a university-educated parent continues to exert a direct effect on an individual’s propensity to graduate from university. The paper draws on the theories of Maximally Maintained Inequality and Relative Risk Aversion to interpret institutional and student behaviour. The policy challenges of addressing structural inequality in higher education are also discussed.

Dr. Jenny Chesters is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with the Faculty of Education at the University of Canberra. She graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences from the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2004 before transferring to the University of Queensland to complete her Honours year. Her research interests include the ongoing relationship between family background and educational attainment, transitions from education to employment and trends in wealth inequality on both a national and a global level.
